Knights Templar History
The Knight’s Templar were a scared archaeological and theological order founded in 1118. Most know them as a secret order. Many negative opinions and beliefs still haunt their memory. That’s because they don’t know the true history of the Knights Templar.
Originally, their goal was to act as security for Christians making religious pilgrimages to the holy lands. They didn’t just protect Catholics and Protestants, but also Jews and peaceful Muslims. They were crusaders against the Muslim armies, but they primarily engaged with the attacking armies. While their primary mission wasn’t specifically to protect anyone, many of them did.
Sometimes it was because they paid for their protection. Anyone who wished to travel to the holy lands for peaceful religious practices could hire the Knights Templars to ensure their safe journey. Often, they chose to act as holy protectors for their own gain. They saw the benefit in peaceful negotiations with everyone. After all, their primary objective was to procure and safeguard holy artifacts.
Knights Templar Mission
As I said in the beginning, they were a holy order of archaeologists and theologians. They were religious scholars seeking to acquire holy relics and preserve ancient knowledge. In a time when the Catholic Church held so much power and religious wars were constantly being fought, they were at risk of losing precious history and artifacts to the destruction of senseless and petty violence.
The Knights Templars didn’t answer to the Catholic Church or any one religion. They were made of a group who primarily followed the Judaic teachings and beliefs. However, they were also historians. They believed knowledge should belong to the people.
Now it may seem odd that a “secret society” believed knowledge should belong to the people. However, the need for ‘secrecy’ arose due to the restrictions and control of the Vatican. Were it not for the tumultuous time, the Knights Templars may have been more forthcoming with the information they gathered.
The King and The Pope
The Knights Templar did acquire wealth and establish the first banking system. Whether it be through honest work of acting as paid missionaries or through the discoveries of treasure is hard to say. Many believe the Knights Templar happened upon a wealth of gold and valuables which they hoarded for themselves.
Regardless, King Philip IV of France was broke. He needed money to fund his crusade, so he took out loans with the Knights Templars. Unfortunately, he couldn’t pay them back. Rather than ask for any more loans or be indebted to the Knights Templars he plotted with Pope Clement V. Together they accused the Knights Templars of heresy.
The Knights saw it coming and had time to prepare before their arrests. They disbanded and while some remained behind to attempt to clear their name with the church through tribunal, others loaded their fleet of ships and went into hiding. Those who remained were arrested on Friday, October 13, 1307. This is where the concept of Friday the 13nth being an unlucky day comes from, especially if it falls in October.
The Curse
Eventually, several years after the events of the conspiracy of King Philip IV and Pope Clement V, a document was discovered suggesting the tribunal had actually been successful in clearing the Knights of heresy. However, due to pressure from King Philip IV, Pope Clement V caved. The Knights Templars were sentenced to death seven years after their arrest on March 18, 1314.
As Jacques De Molay burned at the stake, he cursed the king, his bloodline, and the pope. Pope Clement V died 33 days later. Within another fourteen years King Philip IV, his sons, and his grandsons died ending his bloodline. This is another reason some people are suspicious of the Knights Templar.
Some believe that among their various studies they uncovered ancient knowledge to actually curse their enemies. Others think they acquire ancient technologies or powerful relics. Among the believed treasures spirited away and hidden by the Knights were holy items such as The Holy Grail, The Arch of the Covenant, and The Ring of Solomon.
The Knights Templar Treasures
Over the centuries their legacy has remained and the rumors persist. Out of the Knights Templars who escaped new organizations branched off. The Freemasons are said to be the descendants of the Knights Templars. They are rumored to still keep the ancient, acquired knowledge safeguarded until the world is ready for it.
There are also many legends of where the Knights Templars fled to and what became of the artifacts. Too many to list. Nearly ever culture at this point has their own version of the Arch of the Covenant story and they insist it is their people who took in the Knights Templars and so the Arch resides with them.
The Knights Templar relics are also speculated to be part of the rumored Oak Island treasure in Nova Scotia. Even my beloved remote little archipelago of Japan has its own Knights Templar legend regarding the Arch of the Covenant. With all the speculation abound we never learn of what knowledge and artifacts the Knights Templars did manage to preserve and where they may have hidden them.
However, it’s probably best not to disregard the curse. The ancient power of manifestation is one of the oldest and most potent ones, especially where strong emotions are involved. I think we can all agree, Jacques De Molay was feeling some pretty strong emotions at the time he cursed King Philip IV and Pope Clements V.
