The Island of HyBrasil
If you have never heard of the island of HyBrasil, it’s another Atlantis like story. Legend says that somewhere off the west coast of Ireland an enchanted island appears every seven years. Normally it’s shrouded fog. Sounds like a fairy tale? Maybe, but before you disregard this particular legend consider the facts and the possibilities.
One possibility is that Hybrasil and Atlantis are one in the same. Often when different cultures have similar legends, they’re referring to the same places, people, and events. We often get hung up on terminology and nomenclature without considering the separate languages and cultures of the past. Therefore, it’s entirely possible that HyBrasil is Atlantis or at least stems from the same origin. HyBrasil was described as a circle with a semi-circle canal which matches the aesthetics of Atlantis.
It’s also possible that if Atlantis really did have superior technologies as rumored, HyBrasil might just be what was left after the reported tragedy. Supposedly Atlantis sank into the sea in one night. If the Atlanteans had the technology to save at least some of their civilization HyBrasil might be the surviving island.
This might also explain the mythology behind it being an enchanted shrouded island. The Atlanteans could have possessed technology that can bend light to make the island invisible, advanced under water facilities, or phase shift technology. These are technologies we’re experimenting with developing now.
Other Beings
However, HyBrasil might not have anything to do with Atlantis at all. There may have been many advance ancient cultures on Earth off and on throughout the ages. HyBrasil may be home to what’s commonly referred to as ultra-terrestrials. These tend to be interdimensional beings. But why appear every seven years? Are they keeping an eye on us?
Perhaps the inhabitants of Hybrasil are our ancestors. They might also be those who many past cultures referred to as the gods. If they are not interdimensional, they might be aquatic. Many past cultures left written histories of an ancient advance race of amphibious beings. The inhabitants of HyBrasil might be the Naga, Kapa, Nommo, Oannes, and/or even the Seraphim.
There are so many more ancient aquatic and/or amphibious beings from all the various cultures. If any or all of these beings exist it’s possible they reside in or on sunken landmasses not too far from the surface. Fluctuating water levels might occasionally allow parts of their societies to become visible.
Another phenomenon that might account for periodic visibility is the bending of space. Assuming these places and being existed in the past, a space-time anomaly could allow us to catch a glimpse of what once existed. There are many places on the planet speculated to be “vortexes”. One such vortex happens to be estimated to be in the area of Ireland.

Facts
While all of this sounds rather fanciful, there are some facts to support the existence of HyBrasil. The island does appear on many old maps. It was charted several times between the 14nth and 19nth centuries. Some reported not only sighting the island, but actually having made landfall. Others claimed it disappeared into fog as they approached. The fact remains an island was charted.
Now consider the time periods. It was first charted in the early 1300s and last reported seen in the early 1800s. That happens to coincide with “a stable period” in sea levels. In the mid 1800s the sea levels began to rise at ever increasing rates due to human use of fossil fuels.
Also, the period of the 1300s through the 1800s is reported to have had several small ice age events. Overall, this is referred to as “The Little Ice Age”. This is because between the 1300s and 1800s there were several documented cold intervals in which a large amount of ice formed in the North Atlantic.
Now, the rise in sea level after the ice from the actual Ice Age melted cause large amounts of land to disappear into the ocean. We can assume something similar might have happened on a smaller scale off and on throughout The Little Ice Age. What if every time those severe cold periods formed ice the water levels dropped enough to reveal islands or the uppermost parts of sunken landmasses?

Seven Year Weather Patterns
This could also explain the legend behind the island appearing every seven years. Weather patterns such as El Nino and la Nina occur on average every 3-7 years. What if every seven years the ENSO weather pattern caused enough glaciers to form in the North Atlantic to drop the water levels? Perhaps the weather pattern was also more stable and reliable between the 1300s and 1800s. Instead of 3-7 years, it might have been 7 years exactly.
The burning of fossil fuels has changed sea and weather patterns which may have resulted not only in increased sea levels, but also increased changes in ENSO. In the 1300s to 1800s an island appearing and disappearing every seven years would have no doubt given rise to all sorts of tales and attempted explanations.
Some of the glaciers that formed during these times may have also been mistaken for islands. Remember part of the legend is that the island was shrouded in fog. A large enough glacier in the fog could have appeared to be an island to passing sailors. Though, personally I believe sailors knew the difference between glaciers and islands.
Which leaves me to believe an island, islands, or an entire landmass does exist. I also believe that at least some of it would periodically become visible when enough ice formed between 1300 and 1850. The land my have been just below the sea level during that stable period. However, it is likely that due to the increase in sea levels since then HyBrasil no longer appears.
The Current
With the current sea level, it is doubtful even a good freeze would reveal the island. However, Google Pro images appear to show a larger landmass, of which Ireland is a part. The locations and shapes beneath the water in the Google images appear to match the ancient maps. HyBrasil was documented to not always be an island, but sometimes just a large rock protruding from the sea.
It’s also possible that the island of legend is still there in plain view. There are many small islands that in modern times have been renamed or overlooked entirely. Dated information and modern cartography may not align. Comparing the old maps and descriptions to the current may have us looking in the wrong place. Perhaps with further exploration of the area we may one day discover HyBrasil. Who knows how many other lost civilizations may have sunken with that landmass. Perhaps even Atlantis?
