A Shrewd Perspective On The Life and Extinction of Humanity

extinction of humanity

Ask anyone today, even most scientists, and they’ll likely tell you that modern humans are superior to our ancestors.  Many believe that Homo Sapien Sapiens are highly evolved and more intelligent than the various hominids that predated the species.  We even named ourselves twice wise. However, I believe the opposite to be true. We may in fact be facing the extinction of humanity.

The Evolution or The Extinction of Humanity

The established model for human progression depicts a tree from which all hominids branch.  Although it can not be determined, it is presumed that all the various Hominidae and prime ape ancestors originated from a single source. However, what if it’s quite the opposite?  Instead of multiplying from a single source into several, what if several similar species evolved parallel to one another across the globe and eventually bottled necked down to one?

Perhaps as each population grow they all began to spread out encountering and interbreeding with one another.  This would have created new hybrid species.  Hybrid species are often strengthened by the introduction of new genetic material.  This is why “pure bred” animals often have weaker immune systems and specific health concerns.

Genetic Degradation

Another way to look at this is if you have continuous inbreeding with a family, you will see genetic degradation with each generation.  This is why some of the Pharaohs of Egypt were discovered to have deformities.  We can assume this applies to a population as a whole.  Without genetic diversity DNA will break down.

Scientists believe that at one point in our history there existed what’s often referred to as a Tolkien like period.  This means that much like the fantasy worlds within a Tolkien novel, there were many different types of hominids coexisting.  However, there is evidence to suggest that one or more mass extinction events severely diminished the populations.  The last event happening approximately 40 thousand years ago with only the Homo Sapien species remaining.

Now think about that for a moment.  For 40 thousand years Homo Sapiens have had no other species to interbreed with.  Also, it is estimated that during that event 40 thousand years ago the Homo Sapien population dwindled to around 1000.  Imagine 40 thousand years of breeding from the genetic material of just 1000.  It’s like the same family inbreeding, but on a larger scale.

IQ Averages

Genetic evidence does suggest that the 1000 or so who survived were likely hybrids, which might also explain how they survived.  Evidence of Homo Neanderthal, Homo Erectus, and Homo Denisovan DNA has been found in the genetic code of modern humans.  However, the fact remains that only one human species has been inbreeding on this planet for approximately 40 thousand years.

Theoretically, the species picked up some new genetic material from viruses along the way, but is that really enough to progress as a species?  It is my contention that at some point Homo Sapiens plateaued and has since been on a decline.  This would explain why intelligence seemed to be increasing, but in recent years appears to have plummeted.

For one thing, IQ averages seemed to rise well into the 20th century.  However, recent studies have shown an obvious decrease in average IQ over the last 13 years, particularly in the United States.  This may not be solely due to the lack of genetic diversity.

Beginning of the Extinction of Humanity

Over the last ten to twenty years humanity has seen a drastic increase in technology.  It has also become more readily available to everyone worldwide.  The Mayan calendar prediction of an “end” in 2012 had most expecting some sort of disaster or apocalyptic event.  When no such event occurred, it was assumed to be a miscalculation or misinterpretation.  I would bet the latter. Perhaps the calendar was meant to predict the beginning of the extinction of humanity.

If 2012 merely marked the end of human progression and the beginning of the technological age, it might have also marked the beginning of the end.  With human dependence on technology, continuous exposure to blue light, constant eye, and more demands of a connected world more and more studies are noting the various adverse effects.

Blue light causes damage to the brain and eyes and interrupts sleep.  Without proper sleep the brain cannot heal.  Eye strain has been shown to increase dementia odds by 40% and instant access to answers from the internet means humans are no longer using their brains to problem solve.  All of these can cause parts of the brain to atrophy.

The Early 1900s

Think back to the early 1900s for a moment.  Remember all the new inventions, the brilliant entrepreneurs, and the revered geniuses?  Think back to the names Rockefeller, Einstein, Tesla, Von Buren, Marshall, Carnegie, Morgan, Ford, Oppenheimer, Hershey, Edison, and so many more.  The level of ingenuity of the early 1900s nearly rivals that of the ancient megalithic cultures.  That just might be where Homo Sapiens peaked and plateaued. Which means this might be where the extinction of humanity began.

Consider that one of the outcomes of that time period was nuclear technology and global pollution.  Radiation and continued destruction of our planet may be another contributing factor to the decline of the human species.  When you look at 40 thousand years of inbreeding, dependence and harmful effects of technology, and nearly a century of living on a polluted planet it’s no wonder humans seem to be devolving.  If we can develop safer cleaner technology, restore the planet, and make contact with an extra-terrestrial species similar enough to us to interbreed with, we might stand a chance.

End of Our Cycle

However, we could simply be at the end of our cycle in history.  In Hinduism everything is cyclical.  The creation and dissolution of the universe is also cyclical and is broken down into four Yugas.  In the first Yuga knowledge and understanding are at their fullest.  In the second only 75% remains.  By the third we have lost 50% and by the fourth only 25% remains.

I believe we are at our fourth.  Many ancient cultures describe a similar cycle with four or five phases and say we are in the last.  Have we reached the extinction of humanity? The population is unsustainable, technology commands our lives, violence and ignorance occupy our interests, and very few still pursue and seek to preserve knowledge.  The time of humanity is over.
