Dream Love: Can You Love someone You’ve Never Met?

Dream Love

Some people dream of love. Some people dream of people they’ve never met. So what about a dream love? Can such a love even be called that? One could argue that a dream love can’t be considered real. Then there’s that long pondered question humans have been asking for centuries; can you love someone you’ve never met?

To answer the first question, I believe dream love is real love. While our dreams may not be considered “real”, the feelings we have certainly are. Ever dream about having an argument with someone and wake up angry at that person? What about waking sad after dreaming of loss? Emotions happen in the brain.

As for the second question, I personally also believe you CAN love someone you’ve never met. While it can easily be argued that in order to love a person you must truly know that person, the definition of “know” is debatable. You can know things about a person, but everyone will have differing perceptions of someone based on their own feelings, beliefs, interpretations, and other influences.

Someone Not Met

Every dream about people you don’t know? Maybe in the dream you know them, but when you wake you realize they all seem to have been conjured from your own mind. Perhaps some dream acquaintances are nothing more than subconscious creations but what if some a real? Can we dream about people from past lives? What about genetic memory? Maybe we’re dreaming about people from memories passed down to us. Or could we be dreaming about people we haven’t met yet?

Many people believe our dreams can be prophetic. It’s entirely possible that some dreams allow us glimpses into the future. Not everyone remembers their dreams upon waking. However, for those who do, could they develop feelings for someone they consistently dream about? Some people experience reoccurring dreams. Sometimes slight details of those dreams change, but not the overall setting or people. It is though that continued exposure and proximity to someone can form a bond. Can reoccurring subconscious exposure and proximity in dreams also form a bond?

For those who remember their dreams, do they miss their dream companions while awake? Many poems, songs, and even fictional stories suggest that is actually a common phenomenon. Possibly one that has plagued human hearts for millennia. What happens to those people when they fall in love with someone while awake? Do they forget their dream love? Is the image of the person in their dreams replaced with that of their new love? Or what if the person they fell in love with just happened to be the person they had been dreaming about even before they met?

Dream Love Between Souls

Dream love

If you were to meet the person you had been dreaming about for years, would you be shocked? Afraid? Doubtful? I think it likely most people would experience a plethora of feelings and try to convince themselves they must be crazy. I’m sure few would be willing to tell someone they met in dreams before. The fear of not being believed or of sounding corny might prevent people from having that conversation.

However, what if two people had that conversation and discovered they both had the same dreams? Or if not the same dreams, at least dreams of one another? Could there exist a subconscious connection between two complete strangers? It has been suggested that souls from passed lives will find one another again in the next life and possibly in every life. There have also been correlations between unknown relatives who somehow manage to find one another even across great distances. Unfortunately, some have married and had children before learning they were related. This is called genetic attraction.

Regardless of the reason, one could argue that strangers who dream of and eventually find each other might be soul mates. I once suggested souls could become entangled. Although such souls may not be consciously aware of such entanglement, I suspect a part of the subconscious seeks the other out. Some believe that souls and even consciousness can leave the body and travel through time and space. It has even been suggested our consciousness does exactly that when we dream. So its possible some part of ourselves really is seeking and finding our soul mates.

To Love Before Site

We’ve all heard the cliché “love at first site”, but what about a love BEFORE site? Although some confuse physical attraction and infatuation with love, I believe most would agree love has less to do with appearance and more to do with substance. People tend to have ideas about what kind of person they want to meet “someday” long before they’re even ready to fall in love. Could a dream love influence those ideas?

Or could those ideas manifest in the form of a dream love? Some people may experience intense feelings of love for a dream manifestation without being able to visualize aesthetics. By that I mean, you might dream about being in love with someone, but can’t recall what that person looks like. Or you may be a very vivid dreamer and usually able to remember every trivial detail, but consistently dream of someone who has no appearance.

Maybe your dream love is simply there. Some people dream of a presence beside them, behind them, or nearby and just know that is their person. For those who recall such dreams when they wake it can be frustrating wondering when you’re finally going to actually see that person’s face and know who it is you’ve been dreaming about.

There’s ample proof that not everyone needs to have met a person or even know what that person looks like before falling in love. Some of my personally favorite real life love stories have been about pen pals who fell madly in love and eventually met and lived the rest of their lives happily together. Sure love at first site sounds romantic, but is it? To me it just sounds like shallow attraction. Love before site sounds more like a true connection. As for me, I’m afraid my heart already belongs to someone. I have no idea who that someone is yet. I’ve only ever met him in my dreams.
